Privacy policy for ytree.morleydna.com
General
If you do not agree with these terms then you may not use ytree.morleydna.com.
ytree.morleydna.com is an online service. It is gratis for your personal, non-commercial use.
Registration at morleydna.com is not required in order to use ytree.morleydna.com. The morleydna.com registration process mentions this in multiple places, yet this is often overlooked.
If the genetic data submitted to ytree.morleydna.com is not your own, you declare that you have the informed consent of the genetic test subject, or that the data has been released by the genetic test subject into the public domain.
Before submitting genetic data through this service's primary forms, you will have to tick a box in order to accept the terms of this privacy policy. You will not have to tick this box again for another ten minutes.
Collection of your data
This service accepts Y-DNA data and provides an automated analysis. This necessitates the service's website collecting and processing the Y-DNA data that you provide. Measures are taken not to collect more than what is required for (i) providing your analysis; (ii) for monitoring the usage of this service; and (iii) for improving the predictor and underlying phylogeny.
The collected Y-DNA data will be logged and archived for the above purposes for up to six years, but it is not held in conjunction with your name, email address, postal address or other unique permanent identifiers. This means that this service is not able under reasonable circumstances to map a collected Y-DNA record back to a unique individual. As such, citing GDPR Recital 26, the GDPR Section 3 actions (correction requests, deletion requests, pause requests, data export requests, et cetera) are not applicable to this service.
In addition to the genetic data collected, each interaction you have with the ytree.morleydna.com services requires our webservers to log the following non-genetic information about you (logged separately from the genetic data):
- the timestamp of your visit;
- your IP address (internet protocol address);
- the webpage you visited;
- the name and version of your operating system (e.g., Microsoft Windows 10);
- the name and version of your web browser (e.g., Google Chrome version 66);
- the website (or, in some cases, the precise webpage) that brought you to ytree.morleydna.com.
This data is used by ytree.morleydna.com's administrative team to get feedback on how the website is being used, and to detect and defend against malicious users.
Some of your other interactions will be logged, separately from the genetic data. Non-identifiable information is collected in order for the operators of the ytree.morleydna.com service to understand how the service is being used:
- downloads of the experimental phylogeny PDF files;
- the language preference settings of your web browser;
- the number of CPUs that your device has;
- clicks on various HTML form controls;
- status messages, such as those explaining why your data could not be processed.
This data is collected on our behalf by analytics tools provided by third parties (details below). Your genetic data and Y-DNA predictions are not shared with these third-party tools.
Usage of your data by ytree.morleydna.com (or its successors)
Y-DNA is the best available genetic tool for studying surnames and patrilines. Other types of DNA (autosomal DNA and mtDNA) are useful for other purposes, but these other types are risky to share, because they can either provide insight into health conditions and/or uniquely identify a person with high confidence.
The algorithms and servers behind ytree.morleydna.com only use Y-DNA data. However, ytree.morleydna.com has a tool which can handle some data formats which contain a combination of Y-DNA data and other genetic data. In order to filter out the raw data from other chromosomes, this tool uses a preprocessing script which runs on your own device. Before excluding the other chromosomes, this preprocessing script tabulates some aggregate statistics (e.g, the number of no-calls) for each chromosome in your provided data, for your benefit and also to allow the algorithm to warn you of concerns about the suitability of your data for haplogroup prediction. The preprocessing script is closed-source, but you are able to review its output before you submit that output to ytree.morleydna.com's webserver for further analysis. The HTML control which holds the contents of your input data file is not part of the HTML form which gets sent to the ytree.morleydna.com servers when you click on the "Submit" button.
23andMe raw data files may contain the name of the test subject. The preprocessing script attempts to expunge this information from data generated by 23andMe. The filename field is editable, so that you can remove the test subject's name if the preprocessing script does not.
The genetic data that you submit to the ytree.morleydna.com service's servers will only be used for the purposes of (a) showing you your algorithmically-predicted position on the Y phylogeny; (b) internally monitoring the phylogenetic suitability of Y-SNPs; (c) internally monitoring aggregate site usage and performance of the underlying prediction algorithm in order to improve the quality of the website and its underlying phylogenetic algorithms; (d) tuning webserver firewall rules.
The underlying phylogenetic algorithms tested and tuned internally using your Y-DNA data may be used in other ventures, as may the phylogenetic trees they create. Care will be taken with singleton phylogenetic branches. Your raw Y-DNA data will not be used elsewhere.
The non-genetic data you submit to ytree.morleydna.com will not be redistributed to third parties (with the exceptions noted below).
For your convenience, the ytree.morleydna.com service will remember the contents of the main HTML form, so that you do not need to re-enter your list of Y-SNP calls each time you encounter an error message or change tree versions or change data formats. This necessitates your device storing a session cookie sent by the ytree.morleydna.com service. This cookie expires when you close your web browser, and our server purges its record of your session within a number of days. The session data is not used to track you across devices or locations.
Information collected by third-party services used to build and monitor ytree.morleydna.com (or its successor services)
This service uses Google reCAPTCHA (a third-party service provided by Google) in order to prevent ytree.morleydna.com from being spammed, scraped or abused by automated agents. Your reCAPTCHA challenge response is sent to Google, so Google will know when you are using this service. Google may correlate this with other interactions you have had with Google services. Google reCAPTCHA may store web cookies in your web browser. Google reCAPTCHA has its own privacy policy, and you should be apprised of it. This service does not send your genetic information to Google reCAPTCHA.
This service used Google Analytics (a third-party service provided by Google) in order to monitor some of the items in the above "some of your other interactions" list.
This service is transitioning away from Google Analytics and towards Matomo, an analytics platform which we can host on our own web servers. Our Matomo installation honors your browser's Do Not Track setting.
To repeat, your genetic data submitted via ytree.morleydna.com is not transmitted to these third-party services.
Security
Your communication with ytree.morleydna.com takes place through the HTTPS protocol, meaning that, after the initial connection, all data transferred between your computer and ytree.morleydna.com goes through an encrypted channel.
This service takes security seriously. That said, by the complex nature of computer systems, no security system is flawless, meaning that there is always some risk that your information could be intercepted by an unauthorised third party.
Cross-border data transfer
This service uses a Canadian web host, and consequently your data may cross from one regulatory area into another one.
Relationship with morleydna.com and the Morley Y-DNA project
This project is separate from the rest of morleydna.com (the Morley Y-DNA project), although these projects do have the same founder.
The data you submit to the ytree.morleydna.com services for analysis will not appear on other morleydna.com subdomains, unless (i) you correspond with the morleydna.com administrator(s) and indicate that you are (or are representing, with their permission) a male with Morley patrilineal ancestry, and further (ii) that you communicate your results from this service to the morleydna.com administrator(s), with consent from you (or the person you are representing) to use this data within the Morley Y-DNA project.
Relationship with other parties
The genetic data that you submit to the ytree.morleydna.com service will not be redistributed in raw form to third parties.
The ytree.morleydna.com service and its successors reserve the right to perform aggregate analysis on the entire submitted Y-DNA dataset, in order to determine things such as (i) whether a Y-DNA marker is phylogenetically erratic, or (ii) whether a Y-DNA marker could represent a novel phylogenetic branch. The ytree.morleydna.com service and its successors further reserve the right to redistribute results of such aggregate analyses to third parties.
